The second edition of the Kansanshi marathon has attracted more foreign participants pacing stride by stride with a horde of local athletes at the Kansanshi Mining organized event.
Over 1,600 athletic enthusiasts embraced their pace in the marathon journey from Trident College for a scenic run along the Kansanshi Mine main road and into the heart of Solwezi, before returning to the mine and finishing back at Trident College.
Kansanshi Mining Plc General Manager Meiring Burger has described this year’s event as fantastic considering the huge turn-out of athletes from all walks of life, the vibe and the positive results achieved from the marathon.
“We see the benefit of sport for people as it gives the spirit of upliftment in Solwezi town. As a mine, the community is part of us and if they do well, we do well. As a competitive endeavor, we like seeing the local athletes training and we see that every year, the sport is getting bigger and more competitive,” Burger said during the sidelines of the 2024 Kansanshi marathon held on Saturday at Trident College in Solwezi district.
The race will feature the Zambia Athletics Association (ZAA) and World Athletics accredited categories that include 42.2 km, 21.1 km, 10 km, and the popular 5 km fun run.
