Vice President, Mutale Nalumango says government intends to develop resettlement schemes in the country.
Mrs Nalumango said the schemes will be developed through partnerships with the private sector and cooperating partners.
She said government wants to make resettlements to be the hub of economic development saying the Malundu resettlement will be the role model for resettlements in the country.
Ms Nalumango said there are 96 resettlements in the country which have not been productive and needs to be developed.
“Government wants to develop resettlements that will improve the living standards of the people,” she said.
She said this in Malundu resettlement scheme in Chief Hamusonde’ s area in Bweengwa constituency in Monze district where she launched the block making exercise for the construction of the houses for families who were displaced by floods early this year.
Ms Nalumango explained that government has provided the block making machine to the resettlement through her office to help people build houses at an affordable cost.
She said the community will be able to build houses with less cement and use other local materials on the 1000 hectares of land subdivided into one-hectare plots for each family.
And Permanent Secretary in charge of Department of Resettlement in the office of the Vice president, Mavis Nkomeshya said 66 households have been resettled in Malundu resettlement.
Ms Nkomeshya said the block making machine is able to produce 2,000 blocks per day adding that people have also been trained in block making.
She said through partnerships with the private and cooperating partners, two mechanised solar powered water tanks have been installed by the World Vision while Chilanga Cement company has provided 1000 pockets of cement to help in making of blocks.
