Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in junction with the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has seized various non-compliant products in Kabwe, with an estimated value of K58,578.00.
The seized items, ranging from fruit-flavored drinks to noodles, alcoholic beverages, snacks, and unidentified foodstuffs, were found to be labeled solely in a foreign language, contravening the laws of Zambia governing product labeling and packaging.
“This enforcement action follows a recent joint inspection conducted by CCPC and ZCSA within the Central Business District of Kabwe. The primary aim of the inspection was to ensure adherence to product labeling standards outlined in the Competition and Consumer Protection Act, No. 24 of 2010 as amended, and the Compulsory Standards Act No.3 of 2017,” the statement read.
Traders are strongly cautioned against vending products that fail to meet the packaging and labeling requirements stipulated by Zambian laws as Non-compliance may lead to severe penalties as prescribed by relevant legislation.
The Zambian Standard – ZS 033: Labelling of pre-packaged foods (Part 1 and 2) mandates that product labeling must be primarily in English, with additional languages permissible. Furthermore, Section 50(1) of the Competition and Consumer Protection Act mandates clear labeling in the official language, including product description, ingredients, manufacturing and expiry dates, manufacturer details, and contact information.
It is reiterated under Section 50(2) of the Act that the sale of goods to consumers must conform to mandatory consumer product information standards set by the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency or relevant competent bodies.
The seizure underscores the commitment of regulatory agencies to safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring compliance with established standards within the Zambian marketplace.
