Zambia is expected to receive over $13 million in funding for disaster management and mitigation efforts this year,
The funding expected to be released in June, follow Zambia’s participation in the Africa Risk Insurance Programme, administered by the African Union.
Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit(DMMU) National Coordinator Dr. Gabriel Pollen revealed this significant boost during the African Risk Capacity (ARC) Agency Conference of the Parties held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Notably, Zambia’s membership in the Africa Risk Capacity yielded tangible benefits in 2022, with an insurance premium payout of $5.5 million during the severe drought experienced that year.
In response to the recurring threat of drought, Dr. Pollen outlined government’s proactive measures which include the implementation of a robust drought response mechanism aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of drought through strategic interventions.
One such intervention highlighted by Dr. Pollen is the prioritization of water harvesting infrastructure.by harnessing the country’s abundant water resources.
“Zambia aims to enhance its resilience to drought and ensure sustainable water management practices,” he said.
He said government’s commitment to expanding irrigation capabilities is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity, ensuring food security and potentially creating surpluses for export.
Addressing the ratification of the African Risk Capacity Treaty, Dr. Pollen affirmed Zambia’s commitment to the agreement pending finalization of internal processes, including parliamentary approval. This ratification signifies Zambia’s proactive stance in enhancing regional cooperation for disaster risk management.
“As Zambia prepares to harness these funds and implement proactive measures, the nation’s resilience against natural disasters is poised to strengthen, paving the way for sustainable development and prosperity,” Dr. Pollen said.
