Over K150 million set aside to enhance trade schools

By Felix Katyetye

The Ministry of Technology and Science has announced an allocation of K150 million this year to upgrade and equip trade schools across Zambia.

Technology and Science Minister Mr. Felix Mutati, said the initiative is aimed at modernizing educational infrastructure and provide essential tools to enhance vocational training.

Mr. Mutati revealed this at the Copperbelt Agricultural Mining Industrial Networking Enterprise (CAMINEX) Breakfast hosted by ZANACO, detailing the funding allocations.

“We are dedicating K80 million to upgrade trade schools to contemporary standards and an additional K70 million to procure new equipment,” he said.

He said the investments are intended to equip youths with the necessary skills to meet industry demands upon graduation.

The initiative also underscores government’s commitment to improving vocational education, ensuring that students receive practical and relevant training.

“Our goal is to see that our youths attain the best skills while in school, preparing them for the workforce,” Mr. Mutati added.

The Minister further announced Zambia’s progress in preparing to host the World Skills Africa Competition set for April 2025 in Livingstone. The competition will feature Zambian youths competing in 21 different skills, following Zambia’s successful bid against other African nations to host the event.

The minister called on the mining sector to support this initiative by providing opportunities for young Zambians to refine their skills ahead of the competition.

“The mining industry should take an active role in fostering the development of our youth, giving them a platform to excel,” he said.

Meanwhile Mr. Mutati disclosed that Kagem Mine has committed $2.5 million for the construction of the Chapula Vocational Training Center in Lufwanyama District. The groundbreaking ceremony for this center is scheduled for next month. This new facility will offer the youths on the Copperbelt an invaluable opportunity to acquire various vocational skills, he said.

This substantial investment in vocational education is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Zambia’s human capital and foster economic growth through skill development.
