Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, has called for heightened efforts in climate change adaptation as Zambia grapples with the mounting effects of global warming.
Speaking at a high-level breakfast meeting focused on advancing climate change adaptation in the country, Dr. Chibamba emphasized the urgency of coordinated action across sectors to safeguard Zambia’s future.
“Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a present reality affecting our economy, agriculture, and livelihoods,” Dr. Chibamba said.
He said the government is committed to fostering resilience, but that there is a need to work hand in hand with stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, and international partners to build sustainable solutions.
The breakfast meeting, which brought together government officials, climate experts, and international donors, underscored the need for Zambia to develop adaptive capacities, especially in rural areas where communities are most vulnerable.
Dr. Chibamba highlighted the critical role of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment in driving Zambia’s climate agenda but stressed that success would depend on collective action.
“Our agricultural sector, which is the backbone of our economy, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We must promote climate-smart agriculture, ensure the preservation of natural resources, and implement policies that support sustainable development,” he added.
Dr. Chibamba also commended the ongoing support from international climate funds and partners who have helped Zambia implement various adaptation programs.
He, however, urged that more financial and technical resources are needed to accelerate the pace of progress.
“We must not lose sight of the fact that climate change adaptation is a long-term commitment. The government is determined to work with all stakeholders to ensure that Zambia not only adapts but thrives in the face of climate challenges,” Dr. Chibamba concluded.
The meeting is expected to lead to actionable plans to support Zambia’s climate adaptation goals, particularly in agriculture, water management, and renewable energy.
