(NAIS) Agriculture Minister REUBEN MTOLO has urged the Sustainable Development Goals Centre for Africa (SDGCA) and other cooperating partners in Zambia to intensify the support towards the promotion of agroforestry in the country.
Speaking when he launched the distribution and planting of 40 thousand trees in Chief Chinyaku area in Chipata, Mr. MTOLO said the planting of trees is aligned to government’s programme of attaining the sustainable development goals of zero hunger by 2030.
He said agroforestry helps in improvement of the environment to mitigate climate change and contribute to food and income security by improving soil fertility.
Mr. MTOLO also notes that the tree planting and distribution launch has renewed hope to fight climate change and hunger in the country.
And Sustainable Development Goals Centre for Africa Acting Director General CAROLINE MAKASA, said integrating agroforestry into cropping and livestock keeping will contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Meanwhile, Chipata City Mayor GEORGE MWANZA said the issue of climate change is real and needs concerted efforts.
