PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has implored the Church to work closely with Government in ensuring that community projects implemented using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) benefit citizens.
The United Party for National Development (UPND) administration increased CDF from K1.6 million to K25.7 million.
President Hichilema said Government views the Church as a partner that supplements its efforts to improve the welfare of people in various sectors like health, education and women empowerment.
“This is an area [community development] we pay particular attention to, following Government’s enhanced Constituency Development Fund, which has been enhanced substantially and we will continue partnering with the church to enhance community based projects,” he said.
Speaking during centenary celebrations of the Salvation Army’s existence in Zambia, the President said Government is not in competition with the Church but that the two should work together in unity to serve people.
The celebrations were held under the theme: ‘Ebenezer thus far the lord has brought us.”
“The Salvation Army has done a great job over the years. It has been a strategic partner to Government from years back. including the colonial period.” Mr Hichilema said.
The head of State congratulated the Salvation Army on its 100 years of existence, service and evangelism in Zambia.
Mr Hichilema said the Salvation Army’s 100 years of existence is not a small achievement, but one that speaks of dedication and service to citizens.
“100 years of service, 100 years of evangelism, it is not a mean achievement, it can only be achieved by those who are dedicated. We are proud of you,” he said.
The President said Government will continue partnering with the Church in improving people’s lives.
In a sermon, Salvation Army world leader Brian Peddle encouraged the soldiers of the church to serve and reach out to others through the love of God.
General Peddle urged Christians to rid themselves of sin and live upright lives.

Earlier, Salvation Army world president of women ministries Rosalie Peddle said she is inspired by the love the Salvation Army in Zambia has for God and encouraged them to continue being vessels of love.
“You have left an impression in our hearts, we are so inspired by your love for God,” Ms Peddle said.
Salvation Army territorial commander Alfred Banda thanked the President and his Wife, Mutinta, for joining the church to celebrate its existence in Zambia.
Mr Banda said the church has grown over the years and members are proud of its achievements.
In a vote of thanks, Potiphar Piligano said the church will continue partnering with Government in various spheres.
During the celebrations, the President took time to interact with congregants, whom he also took photographs with.
