Anglo American, 2 other firms explore for copper

(Times of Zambia)-Anglo American Corporation and two other large-scale mining firms are exploring for copper and other minerals in Mwinilunga District in North-Western Province.

District Commissioner Harrison Kamuna says Anglo American Corporation, Rio Tinto and Zamsort companies have been doing mineral exploration works in the district.

Mr Kamuna said in an interview that three companies have been in the district conducting ground works with possibilities of developing mine projects in the area.

He said several other small scale mining firms were conducting exploration and others expressing interest to set up mine projects in the district. “Mwinilunga has a rich mineral deposit that is attracting global experts in the mining industry that are doing great. The geology is rich in copper, gold, cobalt and many other minerals. The area has super grade copper, it is just like a volcano point waiting to explode to give dependent to the Zambian people,” he said

He said areas under chief Chibwika and Sailunga which hosted the Kasenseli gold mine project had a deposit of various minerals.

Mr Kamuna said actualising investment in the district would improve the economy of the district through improved revenue collection by the government for service delivery.

He said there were also some mines in the district such as Kalaba and Chila Matambo on a small scale but have been dormant.

Mr Kamuna said Zamsort mine had helped in the rehabilitation of some roads in the district and with more firms coming on board, more roads would be rehabilitated.

He said increased investment in mining would create jobs and business opportunities in the district.
