Australia praises Zambia’s stance on death penalty

(ZNBC)-The Australian Government has congratulated Zambia for abolishing the death penalty saying the decision is an historic achievement.

Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade PENNY WONG says his country opposes the death penalty in all circumstances for all people.

He said this in a congratulatory letter from the Australian Government to the Zambian government which was presented to the High Commissioner for Zambia to Australia, Dr. ELIAS MUNSHYA in Canberra today.

Mr. WONG further said Australia looks forward to further cooperation with Zambia towards the global abolition of the death Penalty.

And Dr MUNSHYA said the Government is committed to promoting democracy, human rights, good governance, and basic freedoms.

He said President Hichilema on 23rd December 2022 signed legislation abolishing death penalty.

Dr. MUNSHYA said Zambia also removed the offense of criminal defamation of the President from the Zambia’s Penal Code in further demonstration of President Hichilema’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
