UNITED States President Joe Biden has commended President Hakainde Hichilema’s momentum to promote public accountability through the fight against corruption.
Mr Biden has also hailed president Hichilema on the reforms to protect the press and prevent all forms of public crime.
He said this through his National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during the official opening of the International Anti- Corruption Conference (IACC) in Washington, US this week.
“In Zambia, for example, the president is leading what he has called a New Dawn, including reforms that protect the Press, promote accountability and reject corruption and crime. He and other leaders around the world are breathing new life into the old adage; where there is a Will, there is a way,” President Biden said.
Meanwhile, Transparency International Zambia Chapter executive director, Maurice Nyambe has said President Biden’s recognition of President Hichilema gives hope that the country’s leadership has a strong stance against corruption.
“Zambia’s good standing in the global community clearly shown in President Biden’s statement indicates that we have a lot of eyes watching us. We need to go full throttle with the commitment to fight corruption,” Mr Nyambe said in response to a Press query from Washington yesterday.
The IACC ran under the theme: ‘Uprooting corruption, defending democratic values”.
