Bus operators, RTSA engage over fares hike.

By FRANCISCA CHOMBA

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and bus operators will today hold a consultative meeting to consider a request by transport  operators to increase bus fares.

The proposed increase in the fares would only be effected after approval by all concerned stakeholders including the ministry of Transport and Logistics.

RTSA head of public relations Frederick Mubanga said yesterday that the new move was in line with the conditions pursuant to which the Road Service Licenses (RSL) were granted.

Mr Mubanga was subsection 12 (d) of Section 108 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 underscored that a person applying for a RSL and a holder of such licence applying for its variation, shall submit to the directors the rate of fares of the proposed services.

“The meeting to discuss the bus fares comes in the wake of the increase in fuel pump prices by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) announced on December 16, 2021,” he said.
