The vision Zambia initiative is urging the government to consider a comprehensive training for teachers on how to handle menstrual hygiene in schools to help young girls.
Organization Executive Director Namutula Sindila has lamented challenges that young girls face during their menses including a lack of access to sanitary pads that keeps some of them out of school, a lack of proper guidelines for male teachers to support girls during their menses and a lack of sanitary facilities in public schools among others.
Ms. Sindila is of the view that the Ministry of Education must come up with a deliberate policy to enhance menstrual health and hygiene education in all public schools.
She adds that while organizations such as hers are passionate about menstrual hygiene for young school girls, the taboos and myths associated with the natural phenomena can only be dealt with by changing systems, laws and guidelines to enhance support them through training of teachers.
