In a significant diplomatic and economic boost, Zambia is set to reap major benefits from the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing from September 4 to 6.
President Hakainde Hichilema’s visit to China, which coincided with the summit, has paved the way for enhanced bilateral ties and substantial development projects in key sectors like energy, transportation, and agriculture.
Speaking at a briefing held at the Chinese Embassy in Zambia on September 11, Ambassador Han Jing outlined the outcomes of the summit and their implications for Zambia.
The summit, which focused on advancing modernization and building a high-level China-Africa community, saw China commit to supporting Africa’s development with US$51 billion in financial support.
Energy Cooperation: Ending Zambia’s power deficit
One of the standout achievements of President Hichilema’s visit was the signing of numerous energy agreements aimed at addressing Zambia’s persistent power shortages.
China has committed to helping Zambia diversify its energy mix by investing in solar and hydropower projects that are expected to generate an additional 720 megawatts of electricity.
Key agreements include a framework cooperation deal between ZESCO and Power China for the installation of rooftop solar systems, as well as contracts for the construction of two 200MW solar photovoltaic plants at Kariba North and Kafue Gorge Lower.
Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to explore water transfer projects and national power planning, further solidifying China’s role in helping Zambia overcome its energy deficit.
“China’s involvement in our energy sector will not only end load-shedding but position Zambia as a regional hub for electricity export,” Ambassador Han emphasized.
Revitalization of the TAZARA Railway
Another major highlight of the visit was the agreement to revitalize the TAZARA railway, a crucial transportation link between Zambia and Tanzania.
The revitalized railway is expected to play a key role in promoting regional connectivity, boosting trade, and facilitating the movement of goods, particularly for mining, agriculture, and logistics.
The project, which involves China, Zambia, and Tanzania, aims to transform the 1860-kilometre railway into a dynamic economic corridor.
“TAZARA will not only be revamped but turned into a railway to genuine prosperity and development, creating jobs and increasing revenue for Zambia,” Ambassador Han stated.
