CONGRATS DR. MONDE MUYANGWA – HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Dr. Monde Muyangwe on her appointment as Assistant Administrator for the USAID Bureau for Africa.

According to a congratulatory message Mr. Hichilema wished Dr. Muyangwe the best in her new role and that he was looking forward to continued cooperation with the USA in the journey to build a Zambia.

“We wish her all the very best in her new role and look forward to our continued cooperation with the USA in our journey to building a better Zambia for our people,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema added that he conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Muyangwe on behalf of Zambians for Officially carrying the mandate of Assistant Administrator of the USAID Bureau for Africa.

And that he noted with excitement the observation remarks made by the USAID Administrator Samantha Power that despite many countries contending with significant debt incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic Africa as a continent still offers a wellspring of potential and power to recover.

“We also note with gratitude the remarks made by the USAID Administrator Samantha Power, who, before administrating the oath of office on Dr. Muyangwa, observed that despite many countries contending with significant debt incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of citizens thrown into poverty, and the threat of autocracy looming large in Africa, as it does worldwide, the Continent still offers a wellspring of potential and power, to recover,” he said on his Facebook page.

President Hichilema further added that he agreed with Administrator Power that despite democratic setbacks African citizens are now demanding that government respect their rights and dignity and that together with other Africans are leading the way.

“..In unseating autocratic incumbents by running on platforms that promise to fight corruption, spur economic growth and strengthen transparency and accountability,” he said

Before her appointment as Assistant Administrator of the USAID Bureau for Africa, Dr. Muyangwe Currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Freedom House and on the Board of Directors at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Previously she served as Director of the Africa Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center where she led programs designed to analyze and offer practical, actionable options for addressing some of Africa’s most critical, current, and over-the-horizon issues.

Dr. Muyangwe also served as Academic Dean at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University from 2002 to 2013, In this capacity, she oversaw all curriculum and programs, including areas of Security Studies, Counter-terrorism and Transnational Threats, Civil-Military Relations, Defense Economics, and Resource Management, and Conflict Management.

She also served as Professor of Civil-Military Relations at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies from 2000 to 2003.

From 1997 to 2000, she worked as Director of Research and then Vice President for Research and Policy at the National Summit on Africa.

From 1996 to 1997, she worked as Director of International Education Programs at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

She also previously served on the Advisory Council of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, a project of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Dr. Muyangwa has also worked as a development and gender consultant and on a wide range of development projects in southern Africa in the areas of education, housing, health, and nutrition.

Academically Dr. Muyangwa holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Oxford, as well as a B.A. in Public Administration and Economics from the University of Zambia.

She was a Rhodes Scholar, a Wingate Scholar, and the University of Zambia Valedictory Speaker for her graduation class.
