DMMU aids Lusaka flood victims

More than 190 residents of Lusaka’s Mandevu and Kanyama constituencies who were affected by recent floods received food and non-food items from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

The relief items, which include mealie-meal, beans, kapenta, and blankets, were handed over by Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata, who was accompanied by DMMU National Coordinator Dr Gabriel Pollen, Mandevu area Member of Parliament Christopher Shakafuswa, and Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Zulu.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Minister Mulyata stated that Government would always respond in the shortest possible time to people affected by floods and other disasters in the country.

The Minister saluted the Office of the Vice-President for quickly responding to needs after the area MPs requested the intervention of the Vice-President during question time in Parliament.

Dr Pollen emphasized that the response to emergencies was not based on political affiliation or patronage, but on the impact and the magnitude of the shocks the people suffer from disasters countrywide.

The National Coordinator further stated that besides providing food and non-food relief items, DMMU has also provided chlorine to the flood-affected areas as a way of countering the outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
