Disaster Mitigation and Management Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator Dr Gabriel Pollen has commended FQM Trident Mine for its Emergency Response (ERT) Model and emergency preparedness. Dr Pollen said this when he led a team of DMMU directors and officers on a spot check of the emergency preparedness and disaster mitigation measures of the mine in Kalumbila District. He said the ERT model at the mine must be emulated.
FQM Trident General Manager Junior Keyser said it was important for the Mine to meet and have a workable relationship with DMMU just like it has good relations with other Ministries and Government departments. He said apart from having a viable airport emergency response team, the Mine promotes mine and community safety and has done a lot of work on the security at the two dams on site namely Chisola and Musangezhi to prevent dam failure that can negatively impact the community.
Before taking the team on a guided tour of facilities, FQM Trident Safety Manager Atkins Sitwala said the mine is fully prepared to handle multiple emergencies that may occur on the mine site such as hazardous material spillage, fires and other significant incidences that can affect the environment and surrounding communities. Mr Sitwala added that the Mine has a control centre that monitors and detects any changes that could lead to an emergency.
