EXPLOSIVE KILLS 3 AND INJURES CENSUS ENUMERATOR

Including two year-old baby, leaving two others injured in Mpulungu

THREE children including a two-year old baby of Mpulungu district have died while a census enumerator and another adult have sustained serious injuries after an unknown device exploded.

The incident happened at Kapasa village on Wednesday around 12:00 hours.

Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao who confirmed the incident said it was regrettable.

Mr Mbao said the three children met their fate while playing with an unknown device which exploded killing them on the spot and injuring the other two persons.

he said the two survivors sustained multiple fractures but were in a stable condition.

Mr Mbao identified the children as Promise Simusokwe, two, Richard Sinkala, five, and Philip Simbeye.

He also identified the two survivors as Evelyn Nachilima, 44, and Ronald Simutowe, a census enumerator who was on duty.

“The information I have received is that the children who were playing picked up an unknown device that later exploded killing them and leaving two adults that were near with serious injuries and they were rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Mr Mbao, who is Mpulungu Member of Parliament, said investigations to establish the cause of the explosion had been instituted.

“We have launched investigations into the matter to establish the cause of the explosion and we are going to ensure that the area is searched thoroughly,” he said.
