Government commits 4.4m euros for border posts ICT upgrade

(ZNBC)-Government has dedicated 4.4-million Euros towards addressing infrastructure and ICT at Chirundu, Mwami and Nakonde Border posts.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Permanent Secretary, JOHN MULONGOTI says this is being done through the Zambia Border Posts Upgrading Project.

Mr. MULONGOTI says this effort is aimed at improving the border posts’ operations and boosting international trade for economic sustainability.

Speaking when he handed over five servers and storage systems valued at over 547,000 dollars to Zambia Revenue Authority-ZRA in Lusaka , Mr. MULONGOTI said ICT is essential at border posts because it enables smooth operations.

The Permanent Secretary said the procured equipment will assist in addressing the ICT needs of ZRA because of their expandability and scalability.

Mr. MULONGOTI said the equipment have been procured under Zambia Border Post Upgrading Project with support from COMESA and the European Union-EU.

Meanwhile, ZRA Acting Commissioner General, MOSES SHUKO expressed gratitude to government and stakeholders for their concerted effort towards improving operations at the borders posts.

Mr. SHUKO said the procured equipment will help with efficient service delivery at the mentioned border posts.

And COMESA Assistant Secretary General, KIPYEGO CHELUGET said delayed service delivery at border posts hinders business hence the initiative.

Dr. CHELUGET disclosed that many border posts in the COMESA region face ICT challenges resulting into creation of an unfriendly business environment.
