GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO EMPOWERING WOMEN,GIRLS

(ZANIS) Copperbelt Province Minister ELISHA MATAMBO says government remains committed to ensuring women and girls are empowered to deal with the effects of climate change.

Mr. MATAMBO says women should position themselves and get involved in sustainable initiatives in the province so that their leadership translates in effective climate change action.

The Minister said this in a speech read on his behalf by Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary AUGUSTINE KASONGO.

And Ndola District Commissioner JOSEPH PHIRI has urged men to support the women in society.

Meanwhile Kitwe District Commissioner LAWRENCE MWANZA says government has placed economic empowerment programmes as one of the priorities in the promotion of gender equity and equality.

Speaking during the commemoration of International Women’s Day in Kitwe, District Mr. MWANZA said women are gifted with skills and knowledge in many aspects of life.

He says with Zambia being a signatory to many international instruments supporting rights of women, this year’s theme recognizes the contribution of women and girls in leading the change of mindset on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Mr. MWANZA has further urged women to form Cooperatives in order to benefit from the many empowerment programmes being initiated by the government.

And Kitwe District Gender Sub Committee Chairperson SHARON CHISANGA has called for strategies that will aim at empowering women as well as finding sustainable solutions to reduce Climate Change disaster risks.

Meanwhile, United Party for National Development -UPND- National Deputy Chairlady SUBETA MUTELO said the government has continued to fulfill policies that support the empowerment of women.
