PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Angola President Joao Lourenco on his re-election after the Government’s Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won last month’s election with 51 percent of the vote.
Although the vote was disputed, the Constitution Court last week rejected a petition filed by the main opposition party, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), to annul the election results.
“Congratulations to His Excellency João Lourenco on being re-elected President of Angola,” President Hichilema said n his online platforms yesterday.
“We commend he Angolan people for exercising their rights to vote. We look forward to strengthening bilateral relations between our sister countries. Muitos Parabens,”
The Constitution Court last Thursday dismissed a complaint filed by UNITA which was seeking an annulment of the August 24 closely contested election.
With that, it meant MPLA prolonging it’s nearly five decades of uninterrupted rule and President Lourenco, who took from Jose Eduardo dos Santos in 2017, assuming a second term.
UNITA a former rebel group which was led by Jonas Savimbi, went into election with Adalberto Costa Jr as the Leader.
