Police in Lusaka have arrested an illegal health practitioner for allegedly causing the death of a patient.
The suspect, Brian Musonda, a Congolese national, was arrested following a joint operation by the police and the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
Mr. Musonda is alleged to have conducted an operation to remove fibroids on a 37-year-old woman, but the woman died during the procedure.
Investigations revealed that Mr. Musonda was operating an illegal health facility from his residence in Lusaka’s Makeni East area.
At the time of his arrest, one patient was found admitted at the illegal health facility and various medical equipment and supplies were seized.
The patient was transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for further treatment.
HPCZ Public Relations Manager Terry Musonda has urged health service consumers to desist from seeking healthcare services from undesignated places or persons who are not registered to practice.
He said the council will continue to work with the police to bring to book illegal health practitioners who pose a danger to public health.
