IPPS AND DISTRIBUTORS URGED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GROWING DEMAND FOR POWER IN SOUTHERN AFRICA REGION

Energy Expert Chiko Mudenda has urged Independent Power Producers and distributors such as the Copperbelt Energy Corporation –CEC-to tap into the growing demand for power in the southern African region.
With the current electricity surplus, Zambia is through state owned utility ZESCO Limited exporting the surplus electricity to neighboring countries in the South African power pool, a move which is earning the country valuable foreign exchange.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mudenda says as one of the largest regional power traders, the Copperbelt Energy Corporation must continue spearheading the facilitation of seamless provision of international wheeling services.
Mr. Mudenda is of the view that the high demand and consumption of power should also promote additional investments in new transmission and interconnector capacity by the CEC and other players in the sector.
Further, Mr. Mudenda says once private sector players take the lead in proactively expanding their investment, it will spur further growth of the transmission network.
