Kalingakalinga more than ready for rain season

Kalingakalinga in Lusaka is now better-placed to face floods which are typical of the rain season.

Ward Councillor Nyoni Mukubase says the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has given relief to Kalingakalinga Ward to counter the floods in the area.

Speaking in an interview with Solwezi Today, Mukubase says his team has lobbied for funds to unblock drainages around the ward and dig new ones.

The local government authority has further engaged a contractor to collect garbage in the ward as a way to minimize water-borne diseases.

He adds that the Ward Development Committee submitted the request through the Constituency Development Committee, listing projects that the community brought forward as of paramount urgency.

“As we approach the rain season, we as a local leadership have submitted projects to the Constituency Development Committee to dig some new drainages and unblock the blocked ones before the rains so as to counter the kind of floods that Lusaka Province is associated with,” says Mukubase.

On the accessibility of CDF bursaries and CDF empowerment loans, Mukubase says the awarding of the scholarship is in line with Government outlined policy and everyone is free to apply.

“Currently we have empowered about 15 cooperatives with K20,000 each from the 25 applications we received, and we will ensure that the guidelines to see that the funds meet expectations will be followed accordingly.”

Currently his office is receiving loan applications from business persons who wish to increase their capital.

Some Kalingakalinga residents have thanked Government through the local leadership for the improved service delivery.

Zangosa Kalandi commends the local authority for unblocking the sewer drainage near the Kalingakalinga police post which she said was posing a health threat to the community.

She is glad that the local authority has resolved the erratic water supply.

“Having access to uninterrupted water supply has given us a better standing to maintain hygiene and live as a healthy community and there by contribute to the development of our ward in our own way.”
