In a significant boost to community development, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Chief Operating Officer Malcolm Mewett unveiled the company’s US$1.8 million Integrated Livelihood Project on November 13, 2024, during an event that underscored the mining giant’s dedication to corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The announcement took place in Chingola, attended by notable figures including Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo and local government officials.

Mewett emphasized KCM’s longstanding commitment to uplifting communities where it operates.

“When Vedanta retook over the mine not too long ago, we promised an investment of US$20 million annually in CSR initiatives managed by the KCM Community Development Trust. The Integrated Livelihood Project is a key part of this promise, set to impact 18,610 residents across Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Shibuyunji, home to the Nampundwe Pyrite Mine,” Mewette said.

The project aims to enhance local farming capabilities, improve access to clean water, and promote environmental preservation.

“We will install water tanks to ensure reliable clean water supply, reducing water-borne diseases, and establish community-led environmental conservation efforts such as tree planting,” Mewett said, highlighting the role of Village Water, a local NGO, in implementing these initiatives.

Copperbelt Minister Matambo lauded KCM for their commitment to social development, noting the project aligns with government objectives.

“This initiative exemplifies corporate social responsibility at its best and reinforces our goals for community welfare and sustainable development,” he said.
