Lusaka Hosts the 2024 Zambia Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI)

By John Chola

The 2024 Zambia Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI) has officially commenced today, August 27, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre (MICC) in Lusaka.

Running until August 29, the Indaba is themed “Strengthening the Governance of Zambia’s Minerals for the Energy Transition to Benefit Zambians.”

The event brings together key stakeholders from government, civil society, the mining industry, and international partners to discuss the governance of Zambia’s mineral resources in light of the global energy transition.

The first session after official opening by Mines and Minerals Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, focusing on energy transition and natural resource governance, featured prominent discussants from the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, Ministry of Finance and National Development, and the Chamber of Mines.

The Indaba will explore critical topics such as identifying energy transition minerals, value chains, and the strengthening of institutional capacity to ensure that Zambia’s mineral wealth benefits its citizens.

The event also includes discussions on the social, environmental, and economic impacts of Chinese companies in the mining sector across Zambia, the DRC, and Zimbabwe.

The ZAMI serves as a platform for multistakeholder dialogue, aiming to create actionable strategies for ensuring that Zambia’s rich mineral resources contribute to sustainable development and the nation’s energy transition.
