“Media lacks consensus on self-regulation”

Government has expressed concern at the lack of consensus among the media fraternity over the issue of self-regulation.

Information and Media Minister Chushi Kasanda says the issue of self-regulation is entirely upon the media as the fraternity is better placed to decide on how it wants to be regulated.

Ms Kasanda says all government can do is encourage the media that the fight for self-regulation is actualized.

The Minister was speaking during the 30th World Press Freedom Day Celebrations in Lusaka today.

Ms. Kasanda says in relation to this years theme it is important to focus on the link between freedom of expression and other rights in the manner in which information is disseminated through media platforms.

And Media Liaison Committee Chairperson Enock Ngoma has called for an end to the harassment of journalists and media institutions by political carders.

Mr. Ngoma says continuous harassment of journalists does not paint a good picture adding that the situation has persisted adding that it should be addressed.

He has also called for Government to expedite the enactment of the Zambia Media council bill and the access to information bill.
