MoMo from MTN Launches US$10, 000 2023 MoMo Hackathon

MoMo from MTN has announced the launch of the MoMo Hackathon held on the 13th of September at BongoHive.

This initiative invites talented developers and coders from across Zambia to win their share of US$ 10,000 by creating transformative tech solutions utilising the MoMo APIs tailored for the Zambian market.

Lisa Mulozi of MTN says building upon the commitment to promote financial inclusion, MTN’s MoMo Hackathon seeks to harness the creativity of Zambia’s brightest minds to bridge the financial divide that exists within the country.

The Hackathon serves as a platform for skilled individuals to conceptualise and develop solutions that integrate tech and financial services that extend beyond conventional payment processing.

The hackathon will run till October 9, 2023 and developers will have to submit their groundbreaking ideas by 18th September, 2023, for solutions that leverage MTN Mobile Money APIs.

“Submissions should target consumers, merchants, or businesses and offer solutions that go beyond traditional and conventional payment methods,” said Mulozi

She explana that MoMo from MTN will select the top 12 applicants to advance to the prototyping phase.

She further explained that the selected participants will be required to develop a working prototype of their solution and provide a live demo to the judges.

MoMo from MTN will work in collaboration with technology and innovation hub, BongoHive, to support the recruitment process.

It will be followed by a 3-week  interactive mentorship programme grounded on ideation, design thinking, human-centred design (HCD), and business modelling courses.

This, said Mulozi, will help the selected participants to refine their ideas and build viable prototypes in readiness for pitch day.

The 3-week mentorship programme will not only equip them for their final pitch but alsoenable them to run successful businesses.

“A prize pool of US$ 10,000 will be awarded to the top 3 successful participants – the first place winner will receive US$ 5000, the second place winner will receive US$ 3000 and third place winner will receive US$ 2000,” Mulozi added.

She said the MoMo Hackathon reaffirms MoMo from MTN’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs as well as fostering financial inclusion in Zambia.

This aligns with MoMo’sstrong belief that everyone deserves to enjoy the benefits of a modern and connected life.
