MWANSABOMBWE COUNCIL SEIZES EXPIRED ITEMS WORTH K60,000

MWANSABOMBWE Town Council has seized and disposed of assorted expired items worth K59, 998 confiscated from 11 shops in Kazembe area.
The items include mealie meal, soya pieces, milk, assorted drinks, lotions and washing soaps.
Council public relations officer Glenda Nachinga said a combined team of Public Health officers from the Council and the District Health Office seized the goods in accordance with the Food Safety Act number 7 of 2019 which prohibits the sale of expired foods and the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.
Ms Nachinga warned shop owners to desist from endangering the lives of unsuspecting customers especially during the Mutomboko ceremony period by displaying or Selling expired food and other items likely to affect the health of end users.
She also appealed to consumers to take keen interest in checking on the expiry dates of food products before purchasing them.
“As a local authority, we will continue to carry out random checks on stores in the district to ensure that expired, exposed and unwholesome food articles and goods are not sold to consumers because matters of public health are paramount to the authority.” she said.
