President Hichilema Commissions PDV Metal Steel Plant, boosting Zambia’s industrial ambitions

By John Chola

In a significant move towards strengthening Zambia’s industrial base, President Hakainde Hichilema today officially commissioned the Powerful Diligent Veracious (PDV) metal steel plant located in Lusaka’s South Multifacility Economic Zone (MFEZ).

This state-of-the-art facility marks a milestone in the government’s agenda to bolster industrialization and reduce dependence on steel imports.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships between Zambian citizens and foreign investors, emphasizing that such collaborations can yield substantial economic benefits.

“This highly technologically advanced steel manufacturing plant is testament of how joint ventures between our citizens and foreign investors can work for the good of our economy,” he stated.

For years, Zambia has relied heavily on importing much of steel on the market, but the launch of the PDV plant signals a shift towards self-reliance in steel production, with aspirations to eventually export steel products.

President Hichilema noted that this development would play a crucial role in reducing the country’s import dependency and strengthening its manufacturing capabilities.

The PDV steel plant is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth while also creating job opportunities, particularly for youth and women.

President Hichilema called on the company to obtain an iron ore mining license, which would further support the plant and enhance the value chain within Zambia’s industrial sector.

The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a vibrant manufacturing industry driven by private sector investments.

“Our government remains committed to grow the manufacturing sector through the private sector,” he said, signaling continued support for initiatives that stimulate economic progress and job creation.

The commissioning of the PDV metal steel plant represents a pivotal step in Zambia’s journey towards sustainable industrial growth and economic self-sufficiency.
