President Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambian farmers to take advantage of the lucrative horticulture market in China to produce more blueberries for export to that country.
President Hichilema said in the Government’s continued efforts to provide market linkages for Zambian grown cash crops, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China giving access to the world’s largest market for fresh blueberries.
The MoU, among others, was signed during President Hichilema’s recent six-day State Visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpar Xi Jinping.
“We continue to provide market linkages for Zambian grown cash crops. While in China, we signed an MOU giving us access to the world’s largest market for fresh blueberries.
“This presents an opportunity for Zambian farmers in the lucrative horticulture market, with China importing 43, 000 metric tonnes of blueberries in 2022,” President Hichilema said.
President Hichilema said this through a posting on his Facebook page at the weekend, ending his message with the hashtag #FarningIsBusiness.
During President Hichilema’s State Visit to China, 15 intergovernmental MoUs were signed coupled with a joint statement on agriculture cooperation being issued.
Zambia and China have designated 2024 as the year of business cooperation as well as culture and tourism to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations and Zambia’s 60th Independence anniversary.
