Twelve Undocumented Ethiopians nabbed

By Felix Katyetye

A joint operation by Immigration and Police Officers in Chinsali has led to the apprehension of twelve undocumented Ethiopian nationals. The group, comprising individuals aged between 14 and 26, was detained on May 28, 2024, for failing to present themselves to the nearest immigration officer upon entry into Zambia.

In a statement Department of Immigration Public Relations Officer Mr. Namati Nshinka said the apprehension occurred in the Mutambe Akasuba area of Shiwang’andu District around 11:40 AM, following a tip-off from vigilant local residents. The Ethiopians were found wandering in the bushes, prompting immediate action from the authorities.

“During the operation, an abandoned Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number BAG 4282 was discovered in the vicinity. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Ethiopians were likely transported from Nakonde in the Pajero by unidentified individuals. They were believed to be en route to Lusaka when they were left stranded in the bush,” he said.

Authorities suspect additional accomplices, including the driver of the Pajero, who remain at large. “The search for these suspects is ongoing as part of the broader investigation,” he said.

Mr. Nshinka further said the apprehended Ethiopians have been relocated to Chinsali, where they await prosecution.

H adds that the case underscores the ongoing challenges of managing undocumented immigration and the importance of community vigilance in aiding law enforcement efforts.
