The World Bank has praised Zambia for promoting irrigation farming through infrastructure development.
Bank Executive Director for Africa Group 1 Constituency Taufila Nyamadzabo says other African countries should emulate Zambia by constructing Dams that support agricultural production.
Dr. Nyamadzabo was speaking shortly after touring Mwomboshi Dam in Chisamba district, Central Province.
He stressed that the Dam is key in poverty reduction as it allows both subsistence and commercial farmers to produce crops throughout the year.
And Irrigation Development Support Project -IDSP- Coordinator Daniel Chamba said Mwomboshi Dam has the capacity to hold over 60 million cubic litres of water and irrigate over 5 thousand hectares of land.
Mr. Chamba explained that the project is now focusing on training farmers in irrigation agriculture, following successful construction of the dam.
Meanwhile, Vixers Farming Manager, Anthony Strook, praised government for implementing the irrigation project.
Mr. Strook said the Mwomboshi Irrigation Project, will boost his agricultural activities.
The over 50-million-US-dollars initiative is part of the Irrigation Development Support Project – IDSP, a World Bank funded irrigation infrastructure development project under the Ministry of Agriculture.
