ZAMBIA FOOD SECURE-FRA

FOOD Reserve Agency (FRA) Executive Director Chola Kafwabulula says Zambia is food secure with stacks of around 900,000 tonnes of maize in its storage facilities.

Dr Kafwabulula was speaking in Kalomo District of Southern Province during an inspection of satellite depots in Chilala area.

He said FRA bought 287,000 tonnes of maize, with an addition of the 900,000 tonnes of uncommitted stock which had been secured.

“If you add with the carryover stock, we are talking about 900,000 tonnes of uncommitted stock, so the country is food secure,” Dr Kafwabulula said.

He said FRA would ensure it properly secured the grain to prevent wastage and theft.

He said the country’s food manager was winding up the crop marketing season as the number of farmers taking maize had reduced over the last one week.

He said that K50 million had been secured to start the transportation of maize to the main holding depots.

And FRA Provincial Marking Coordinator for Southern ‘A’ region, Benson Mumba said no cases of stock damage and theft had been recorded so far.

Mr Mumba urged members of the public to inform the agency if they encountered any of the issues.
