Zambia maintains it’s score on Corruption Perception Index for third consecutive year

Zambia has maintained it’s score on the 2022 Corruption Perception Index-CPI- at 33 out of 100 for the third consecutive year.

The country has however improved by one point on it’s rank from 117 out of 180 countries in 2021 to 116 in 2022.

Announcing the CPI results in Lusaka today, Transparency International Zambia-TIZ- Advocacy, Policy and Research Lead- Bright Chizonde says the results indicate that in 2022, there was a significant reduction in bribery activities between the private and public sector and less funds were diverted to companies, individuals or groups.

Mr. Chizonde has since recommended that government ensures the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and other oversight institutions have sufficient resources and independence to perform independently as well as limit private sector influence on decision making by regulating political party funding and campaign financing in Zambia.

And TIZ President Sampa Kalungu observed Zambia’s stagnation of the CPI at 33 points is failure to fight and bring corruption to end adding that in the previous years, TIZ had made proposals to end vice but the government had not taken the recommendation serious.

Meanwhile, ACC Director General Tom Shamakamba has confirmed that to widen the fight against corruption, the commission is involving Anti-corruption investigating entities from other jurisdictions.
