Zambia has continued making positive strides towards revitalizing its railway system, a move aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and strengthening trade.
Speaking at the 13th Annual International Southern African Railway Association (SARA) Conference and Exhibition, held at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg, Tayali emphasized the importance of Zambia’s participation in discussions on the future of regional rail networks.
Tayali outlined the latest developments in Zambia’s railway sector which include projects already completed, those currently in progress, and plans for future initiatives.
He stressed the need for regional collaboration to overcome differences in standards, technology and capital investment, calling for the harmonization of these elements to ensure a unified approach to railway development.
“As a region, we need to prioritize revamping the existing railway lines along our major corridors connecting to sea ports,” Tayali said.
He said Africa must consider and prioritize the development of greenfield railway projects, such as the Lobito Benguela Railway line, to enhance connectivity and intra-trade.
The developments, he said, will ultimately make the cost of doing business more affordable and improve access to markets, thereby guaranteeing economies of scale.
He further called on the SADC Secretariat, SARA, and all regional governments to work together to improve the railway sector and enhance its operational efficiency.
Tayali underscored the importance of having a single regional railway master plan to guide the development of rail infrastructure across SADC member states.
The minister highlighted Zambia’s ongoing efforts to transform its transport sector through the implementation of a 10-year National Transport Policy, initiated in 2019.
“The policy aims to create an efficient and integrated transport system, positioning Zambia as a Regional Transport Hub within the SADC Region. ” This vision is key to addressing long-standing challenges that have hindered the growth of the transport sector, while also maximizing the benefits of improved infrastructure for Zambia and the broader region,” he said.
The conference, which brings together key stakeholders in the railway sector from across the region, also saw the attendance of Zambia Railways Board Chairperson Hon. Emmanuel Hachipuka, representatives from the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and other senior government officials.
