Zambia is stepping into the spotlight on the global diplomatic stage as it takes on a prestigious role as the vice-chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), a key body dedicated to upholding Commonwealth values of democracy, human rights, and constitutional rule across its member nations. The announcement was made at the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
Represented by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe, Zambia is now poised to play a leading role in safeguarding the Commonwealth’s core values. CMAG, established in 1995, is known for its proactive stance in addressing serious threats to democratic governance, such as unconstitutional takeovers and human rights violations. The group can even recommend suspensions or expulsions for nations that stray from Commonwealth principles.
Speaking on the election, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland extended her congratulations to Mr. Haimbe, emphasizing the vital role CMAG plays in maintaining stability and democracy within the Commonwealth. “This leadership role underscores our shared commitment to a peaceful and democratic global community,” she said, commending Zambia’s readiness to champion these principles.
With Zambia’s new appointment, Minister Haimbe expressed the nation’s honor in upholding the CMAG mandate. “Zambia is dedicated to this mission and is prepared to work with our Commonwealth partners to protect and promote the values we all hold dear,” he stated.
As vice-chair, Zambia will work closely with CMAG’s chair, Samoa, and other key Commonwealth members including Barbados, Belize, Canada, Ghana, Malta, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Rwanda, strengthening the coalition against threats to democracy and fundamental rights.
The delegation supporting Zambia’s leadership role in CMAG includes Permanent Secretary Etambuyu Anamela, High Commissioner to the UK Macenje Mazoka, and High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, Elias Munshya—a testament to Zambia’s commitment to championing democracy at the highest levels.
