The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has received over 7000 applications under the tax amnesty exercise on penalties and interest ahead of the expiry date this month end.
The tax amnesty exercise was introduced last year to help businesses and individuals deal with the impact of Covid-19 by scrapping all penalties and interest accrued on tax defaults up to September 30, 2022 once they settle their tax arrears.
ZRA Director Research and Policy Ezekiel Phiri tells Phoenix Business News that as at Saturday 25th March 2023, the authority received and accepted 7,775 applications with Lusaka province having topped the list of applicants followed by Copperbelt province.
Mr. Phiri says although there are quite a number of companies that have taken advantage of the amnesty to declare their employees Pay As You Earn-PAYE-, the authority has also rejected a number of amnesty applications on technicalities.
