Kansanshi Mine2Mine 2024 Cycling Race kicks off from Solwezi to Kalumbila

By John Chola

The 2024 Kansanshi Mine2Mine cycling race officially began this morning, starting from the Petroda Filling Station just outside Solwezi.

Cyclists from across Zambia and the region gathered early to embark on the challenging but scenic route, with the journey taking them from Solwezi all the way to Kalumbila spanning a distance of 140 kilometers.

The initial leg of the route offeres a relatively smooth ride as cyclists rolled out under a neutral start.

The first stretch out of Solwezi features a long, flat downhill section leading to the Mutanda River.

Despite the generally good road surface, participants were advised to remain vigilant for occasional potholes, ensuring to alert fellow riders to maintain safety.

Upon reaching the toll gate, cyclists were instructed to keep left, taking advantage of a designated lane specially opened for the riders.

The race quickly became more challenging as they encountered a steep but short climb out of the Mutanda river valley, followed by a turn at the Mutanda Police Checkpoint, where they continued their journey towards Mwinilunga.

This next stage included a gradual 15-17 kilometers climb that began with a steep ascent but eventually leveled out.

Despite its manageable gradient, the section remained taxing, with cyclists keeping a close watch for any bumps or potholes along the way.

Perhaps one of the most demanding parts of the race is the steep climb from the Lumwana Police Checkpoint to Manyama.

This stretch, known for its sharp incline, kicks up to a 10 percent gradient, challenging even the most seasoned cyclists.

The race organizers set up King of the Mountain (KOM) officials along this route to record climbers’ progress, with signage placed to ensure riders are well-prepared for the ascent.

The fast descent into Manyama town requires caution due to the presence of pedestrians and scattered debris, including broken glass.

Cyclists are urged to maintain single file while navigating this busy area to avoid accidents.

After passing through Manyama, the road offers some relief with a 20 kilometers gradual downhill towards the Lumwana River, often accompanied by a tailwind.

Riders are encouraged to slow down near river bridges, where lips on both sides of the bridges can pose a hazard.

The narrow Lumwana River bridge, in particular, necessitates additional care due to the risk of oncoming traffic.

As the riders climb away from the Lumwana River, the race intensifies with a short but sharp ascent.

The final stretch through the town leads to the Mwombezhi Bridge, with another fast descent requiring caution as cyclists near the end of the day’s stage.

The 2024 Kansanshi Mine2Mine cycling event promises a thrilling ride for participants and spectators alike, with cyclists pushing their endurance and speed over this challenging route.

The support from sponsors like First Quantum Minerals and others ensures the race remains a highlight on the Zambian sports calendar.
