First Quantum Minerals, through its subsidiary FQM Trident Limited, joined forces with Prudential Pensions Management Zambia to celebrate the 2024 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, focusing on the impact of climate change on occupational health and safety.
The event, which was held at FQM Trident, focused on raising awareness about the potential risks associated with climate change, such as extreme weather events, heat stress, and vector-borne diseases.
The event included interactive activities such as quizzes and giveaways to engage employees and promote awareness about climate change and safe work practices.
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, observed annually on April 28th, holds significant importance for FQM and its workforce.
This year’s theme, “The Impact of Climate Change on Occupational Health and Safety,” underscores the need for heightened awareness and vigilance regarding potential hazards.
Speaking during the event, FQM Trident Safety and Health Manager, Atkins Sitwala, reaffirmed the mining firm’s commitment to safety and health in the workplace, while emphasising the importance of maintaining a safe working environment for all employees.
Mr Sitwala highlighted the challenges posed by climate change, such as high temperatures and increased dust levels in the workplace, which can lead to respiratory diseases and heat-related illnesses.
In response, FQM Trident Limited is enhancing its fitness for work programs and promoting the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including dust masks, to mitigate these risks.
“In prioritising safety, we ensure not only the well-being of our employees but also the success of our production objectives.
And at FQM Trident Limited, safety is paramount, and we firmly believe that no job is so important that it cannot be done safely,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, FQM Trident Limited Human Resource Manager, Brighton Mwiinga, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the company’s dedication to maintaining a safe and sustainable working environment.
“As an organisation, we value sustainability and the protection of the environment. We take pride in celebrating key values and promoting a culture of safety among our workforce,” he said.
And Head of Operations at Prudential Pensions Management Zambia, Kombe Temba, underscored the importance of integrating health and safety practices to cultivate a holistic safety culture.
“By prioritising health and safety, we can create a workplace that not only keeps us safe but also supports productivity and well-being,” said Ms Temba.
