Chikotesha books her place at Paris 2024 Olympics

By Felix Katyetye

Renowned FIFA referee Diana Chikotesha has been appointed as the second assistant referee for the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football semifinal clash between USA and Germany.

This marks the first time in the history of the Olympic competition that a trio of African referees will oversee a semifinal match.

Chikotesha, distinguished as the 2023 COSAFA Best Female Referee, joins Moroccan referee Bouchra Karboubi and her compatriot Fatihia Jermouimi in officiating this prestigious match scheduled for Tuesday evening at Lyon’s Stade de Lyon.

The encounter promises to be a thrilling rematch between four-time gold medallists USA and Rio 2016 champions Germany, who faced off earlier in the group stages, with the Americans securing a decisive 4-1 victory.

Hailing from Zambia, Chikotesha has carved an illustrious career on the international stage, recently officiating in the AFCON 2023 final held in 2024.

Her selection for the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football semifinal underscores her growing influence and the recognition of African referees on the global sporting arena.

As anticipation builds for this pivotal match in Lyon, Chikotesha’s participation not only highlights her personal achievement but also celebrates the advancement of diversity and inclusion in international football officiating.

This is according to a statement shared on FAZ official Facebook page.
