Kalumbila golf championship tees off

By Derrick Silimina

80 junior golfers in Kalumbila district took to the Trident Country Club (TCC) turf on Thursday to compete in the one-day junior golf championship organised by FQM Trident Limited.

Speaking on behalf of FQM Trident General Manager Scot Whitehead, company Manager – Risk and Asset Management De Wet Bernardu said the program which started four years ago was quite small but eventually grew after the team captains got as many kids into the program.

“Playing golf teaches one a lot of life skills. The game of golf will teach you that mental ability overcomes physical ability. It will also teach you to be hard on yourself, apply the rules of golf and apply that in your life going forward,” Whitehead said.

The fifth edition of the junior golf championship consisted of boys and girls aged from 4 – 15 years who battled it out on the country’s finest golf course.

The junior golf club is part of the newly formed junior golf academy being spearheaded by the mine. Young boys and girls were selected from communities around the Kalumbila mine catchment area.

Meanwhile, team captain Beza Daka hailed the mining giant and the Trident Country Club for their support to ensure the Junior Golf Program continues to grow in the district.

Daka affirmed that FQM’s consistent support through Trident Foundation has made the Junior Golf Tournament to be one of the best in the country.

“I would like to thank FQM as the main sponsor for the kids and other stakeholders for their commitment to help grow the sport. “I would like to see this junior golf program grow bigger and bigger so that our kids can take up the sport of golf,” Daka said.
