The Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) says the emerald sector presents a significant opportunity for economic development and youth employment in the country.
In a statement, ESMAZ President Victor Kalesha said despite the existing challenges, Zambia’s largest emerald mines, Grizzly and Kagem Mining Limited have been instrumental in generating revenue through mineral royalties and corporate taxes.
“Moreover, these companies have created employment opportunities for over 4,500 individuals, providing a livelihood for many Zambian families,” Kalesha said.
He stressed that despite the challenges faced by small-scale miners, including limited access to finance, equipment, and geological data, the sector remains a vital contributor to the national economy.
Kalesha noted that ESMAZ in collaboration with the government is working to amalgamate a few mines as a pilot project adding that this initiative aims to enhance production, increase revenue, and ultimately benefit the national coffers.
“However, we acknowledge the pressing issue of security in the sector. The government and ESMAZ are working together to address the porous security situation, which has led to the proliferation of loose emeralds on the black market and the flooding of the international market with cheap emeralds.”
