The Ministry of Health says it is closely monitoring the outbreak of the Marburg virus which recently broke out in the west African country of Ghana.
The Marburg virus is a highly infectious disease similar to Ebola and was detected in Ghana earlier this month after two people who tested positive died.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary-Technical Services Lackson Kasonka says despite the distance between Zambia and Ghana, the outbreak of the Marburg virus is a source of concern to Zambia.
Professor Kasonka tells Phoenix News that the ministry is keeping surveillance and awaiting further information and guidance from the world health organization regarding the virus.
And Biomedical Society of Zambia President Mutale Mubanga is calling on government to increase capacity in disease detection following reported cases of Marburg virus in Ghana.
