BoZ Governor Returns: Kalyalya Back in the Driver’s Seat

In a bold move to strengthen Zambia’s financial leadership, Denny Kalyalya has been re-appointed as Governor of the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) for a fresh six-year term, starting October 28, 2024. His tenure promises continued stability and progress in navigating the nation through economic challenges, as noted in a statement by BoZ’s communications assistant director, Besnat Mwanza.

“Dr. Kalyalya has demonstrated exceptional leadership, playing a key role in financial stability both regionally and internationally,” said Ms. Mwanza. His contribution to macroeconomic management during tough times has been lauded by the BoZ board, staff, and management, who offered him their congratulations and prayers for continued success.

Meanwhile, Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane took to the international stage, endorsing Zambia’s Samuel Maimbo as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) candidate for the African Development Bank (AfDB) presidency. Dr. Maimbo’s rise through the ranks to his current role as vice-president of the World Bank demonstrates his ability to handle the rigors of global financial management.

“Dr. Maimbo’s experience, particularly in mobilizing funds for the International Development Association (IDA), makes him the ideal candidate for the AfDB presidency,” Dr. Musokotwane noted. Dr. Maimbo’s track record, overseeing the World Bank’s financial planning and strategic budgeting, showcases his expertise in aligning resources with institutional priorities.

The financial world is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new AfDB president, expected in May 2025, with high hopes that Dr. Maimbo will lead the bank into its next phase of growth.
