The Kansanshi Golf Club yearly charity tournament has raised more than US$10,000 for cancer programmes in the country.
Kansanshi Mining Plc General Manager Anthony Mukutuma said the funds would be donated to the Zambian Cancer Society, which was founded in 2009 with the goal of bolstering the nation’s fight against cancer.
Mukutuma said the mining giant had been supporting the society since 2018 by providing support to cancer patients and caregivers.
“Through this support, the Zambian Cancer Society has been able to buy their first plot in Chongwe and the intention is to build a facility there which can look after caregivers and the cancer patients as well.”
Mukutuma said cancer was a deadly disease which could be treated if detected early.
He thanked the 20 companies doing business with the mines for coming on board to support the fight against cancer in the country.
Zambian Cancer Society Cancer Smart Youth Coordinator for Copperbelt region Chanda Matipa thanked the mine for organizing the golf tournament to support the cancer fight in Zambia.
Matipa said the government and the society are collaborating closely to promote policies to strengthen efforts to combat cancer.
The National Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka was overwhelmed with patients and caregivers hence the funds being raised will go a long way in helping cancer patients.
Kansanshi Golf Club Ladies Captain Riana La Grange was happy with the number of companies that turned up to support the event.
“We are happy we have raised in excess of US$10, 000 and this could not have been possible without our sponsors,” she said.
The sponsoring companies included Bafokeng Hydraulics, Toyota, Spectra Oil, MeLongteng, Olibul Investment Reliant Mining, Liebherr, Cummins, AMSI, Tri Pump, BIA, Orica, Platinum Hydraulics, and Synite Quarries.
