Trident Foundation Limited (TFL) joined the Musele community in replenishing the Musangezhi dam with 25,000 fish fingerlings. The initiative, led by the Musele Community Resource Board (CRB), was funded through the sale of fishing permits and licenses in the Kalumbila District.
Fishing has become a vital livelihood source in Musele, supporting fishermen, vendors, transporters, and fish processors. The fish from the dam not only feeds the Kalumbila community but also reaches neighbouring towns like Solwezi.
Since 2021, TFL, through the Department of Fisheries, has supported the CRB to improve fishing governance, promote sustainable practices, and initially restock the dams with over 230,000 fingerlings. The CRB has actively taken ownership of this initiative, ensuring the sustainability of fishing activities.
At the restocking event, Kalumbila District Commissioner Brenda Sankisa stressed the importance of sustainable fishing to prevent stock depletion. She expressed hope that the community’s model could be replicated in other areas.
TFL’s Programme Lead for Commercial & Administration, Auxilia Kangwa, commended the community’s commitment to sustainability and encouraged them to expand their livelihood initiative.
Zambia National Farmers Union Vice President Albert Hachipabenda thanked the community for their success, achieved through collaboration with the government, traditional leaders, and TFL.
